Hey, Jaleel!
I've never been to college for art, and was told I would need that
little piece of paper (degree) to prove I could draw. I had written
to Disney several years ago, and was told that. After speaking with
people who work for both Disney and WB, and hearing all the horror
stories, I decided I really didn't need that kind of hassle. (Plus,
all the colleges I looked into were charging exhorbant amounts of
money for their "schooling").
Besides, when you draw for a corporation like that, you're not
really an artist. You're a machine. You crank out pictures that
look just like everyone else's pictures. Mickey Mouse has to be
drawn a certain way, and there is no alternative. I've always
regarded art as a creative process; how can one express oneself or
develop a style when they are contrained by rules and model sheets?
Des went to a college in MA, I think, for graphic art design. She
worked for some place in Palm Beach doing logos and advertising
design for local stuff, but quickly got sick of it. She said she
likes drawing toon stuff more, but would not work for a studio
because of the workload and limitations.
Even if I was offered a job by Disney or WB, I'd turn it down. I'd
rather be poor and drawing what I like, than be rich and unhappy.
  Good question, by the way!
