Me, I kind of lean towards the "Ancients" line of
thought. The way I work it in my stories (and will
gradually, over several years probably, reveal to my
readers), humans are still alive and well, on Earth.
In their past, though, they colonized other worlds
and/or dimensions. On these other worlds, they
realized the need for non-human allies against the
various creatures that they encountered - and so, they
created the anthros through genetic-manipulation.
Of course, since then, they've become extinct for one
reason or another (any of the reasons a colony can
fail to work), leaving the anthros with the occasional
tales of the "Ancients" and "gods" who created them
thousands of years ago, early in their recorded
history. And artifacts of power across the world -
hi-tech items (or magically charged items, or both)
that were left behind by the remnants of the human colonists.
