Fractal evolution? Remember - statistics allow for
the clustering of unlikely events. Who knows? Maybe
this worked out much the same way. Especially if
something made the traits intensely desirable
world-wide.
Of course, there's also the theory espoused in
"TransFur," the comic on the Stripe Tease CD (by the
way - why aren't there any of the sisters on said
CD?), that could work out.
