Well 50 species is still quite a pretty hefty competition for
ressources. Even without a direct 'extinction war' just being in
evolution's arena would have weeded out a lot of those competing for
top sentient (as you said some anthropomorphic species might have not
made the cut either).
Anyways, some times in the evolution game it's not even a question of
physical superiority, just luck and timing.
