Trying to remember all this just from memory, so here goes
nothing...
Valencia was pregnant before she was married. She married her
first husband (whose name I can't recall) when she was 16, about 4
months before the girls were born. Val divorced him 6 years later
because he had become an alcoholic and refused to work any more. Her
(now ex-) husband worked at a local garage as a mechanic.
The girls don't remember their dad much, and have no desire to meet
him. He's never tried to find his daughters, so why should they
bother trying to find him?
He was a somewhat okay guy, but was prone to procrastinate, and
wasn't very good at saving money. He lived from paycheck to
paycheck, basically, and after a few years, started spending more and
more of that paycheck on liquor. Val became aware of this about a
year and a half before the divorce.
