Ooh, I get to show off my extremely limited knowledge of folk music: The song is actually about two Scots soldiers who are prisoners of the French. The first fellow's family was able to raise the ransom that the french were demanding, so he is about to be released and go home on the deck of a ship (the high road). However, the second fellow's family was too poor to buy him back, so he is going to be executed and go home as cargo in the hold (the low road). Of course, the executed soldier will get home first, although only in spirit.

I always detested that song, until I found out the story behind it. Now it doesn't seem so pointless and maudlin.
