*Having post withdrawal, my mail's been dead since Thursday, so brace
yourself for some replies... ;)
In my experience, furs do seem to gravitate to their own perceived species
(or do tend to stick to one species, if they don't have one themselves), but
I rarely see cases where art has decided someone's chosen species. Of
course, this is just in my experience, and since I tend to avoid RPs and
hang with people who are consistent in their fursona, I'm probably not
seeing a wide slice of the community. Personally I'm a Canid species, but
this was decided for me long before I even knew about the existence of
furotica, or even the community at large.
About skunks specifically, I've had a few thoughts about why they're so
popular in the fandom in contrast to outside of it (and think about it, how
many NON-furries claim to like skunks? Not too many, I've found), and it
just seems to me that they're the Swiss Army knife of anthro forms. Variable
hair length, a fairly unique color pattern, easy bipedal conversion,
expressive face, big poofy tail, and a battery of optional defensive
measures all combine to make the skunk perhaps the most versatile of all
"out of the box" anthro builds, and I think the community shows this to
great advantage.
Damn, am I still talking? Like I said, mail withdrawal... =)

And for the record, I think *all* of the reptile species I know are
profoundly grateful for the existence of Des Lee, and it sure's hell isn't
limited to them, either ^_^

Scrapper has been a black dragon for many years, with
story behind how he became so, though other
explanations are offered for the charater's fictious
background. Yes, he portrays many of my RL
charateristics, including many of the ones that I
suppress due to their relatively low social
acceptability. Great thing about VR is that we can
all be as we want! Can you imagine what the general
public (ie, mundanes) RL opion of the skunk trio would
be!!!

Not being a skunk (I'm dragon)I probably can't answer
this as well as someone who was, but I don't find I
gravitate towards my own kind, though I do find Des
really hot!!! Have a preference for vixen generally!
Scrapper, Black Dragon with his options open!
