I have a few friends that do molds and castings of furry femmes.
First off is to make sure you have lots of air holes, in the mold, to
allow air to escape during the pouring. One friend makes his
holes and uses them liberally (made with a large straight pin
stuck in the statue, before making the mold and removed after
the mold is cured), he can have 100+ pins stuck in the statue,
usually at the end of a point on them. i.e. tip of hair, end of
tail,
edge of clothing, anywhere you want resin to go, but air could be
trapped. After the mold is finished, he will remove the pins,
leaving a small hole for air to escape. When he gets ready to
pour, he sprinkles a releasing powder, into the mold, he placed
the mold into a pressure chamber, pours the resin, closes the
lid and applies air pressure to force the resin down into the
mold, forcing the air out through the air holes you made earlier,
in the mold. After enough time has passed, he will open the
chamber, remove the mold and carefully remove the mold from
the casting. Most of the time the casting then needs just a light
sanding to look good, sometimes a little bit of resin needs to be
mixed up to fill a void that may have occurred.
