Uh, well, not really. There's a technical term for it, but I can't
recall it at the moment. I've learned that by experiencing pain or
discomfort, over a prolonged period of time, can increase your level
of pain tolerance. (Plus, it also allows you to better appreciate
when you are not in discomfort). I don't get all whacked out and
start cutting myself, obviously, but any injuries inflicted while
working or playing are dwelled upon, and I try to understand what the
sensation is.
For example, I slipped in the kitchen one day, many years ago, and
sliced open my right wrist pretty good. It was definitely a bleeder,
and I recall using every curse word I knew of once it happened. But
once I wrapped it up, I was thinking, "where does it hurt? does the
pain spread further than just the wounded area? what kind of pain is
it? Sharp? Dull?" I think I was just analyzing the situation, and
trying to put pictures and sensations into words that could be
catalogued in my memory.
And check this out: I've been an insulin-dependent diabetic since
I was 3 and-a-half years old. Since that time, I've endured nearly
17,200 insulin injections. And yes, I hate needles with a
passion. ;)
