The girls continued running across the yard, and jumped over the
short hedge dividing the two houses. They took a left at the corner
of the neighbor's house and stopped, pressing their backs against the
wall. They were laughing and out of breath.
"Did you see that? Man, was he ever ticked!", snorted Lori.
"I bet we won't get dinner for a week after pulling this stunt,"
breathed Natasha.
"Yeah, but it was worth it," finished Onyx.
They slowly peered around the corner. Jim was nowhere in sight.
"Now where'd he go?" wondered Natasha.
They quickly retreated back to the safety of the wall.
"That was a BIG mistake," said a decidedly cold voice.
Spinning around, the sisters found themselves staring into the face
of an obviously annoyed chameleon.
"Oh! Des! Whew. Man, we thought you was Jim!" sighed Lori,
pressing her hand against her chest.
"You're gonna wish I was," replied the chameleon, approaching the
skunks slowly, her skin hue changing from a pleasant blue-green to a
dangerous black.
"Oh shit," replied the trio in unison.
Onyx was the first to clear the corner of the house, but she didn't
get far. Natasha, in her haste to be the first one out of there, ran
into her sister full-force, and both of them stumbled to the ground.
Lori was about to jump over her fallen sisters when Desiree grabbed
the fleeing skunk by the hair and threw her down to the ground.
"What the fuck, Des?!?" yelled Lori, entangled in her siblings'
arms, legs and tails.
"If you'd just pulled down his jeans, that would've been amusing.
But nooOOOooo. You three gotta pull down his shorts, too." Her tail
was snapping back and forth violently.
"You girls tryin' to get a free show or something? I'm the ONLY
one who gets to yank off his pants like that," she growled.
"Yeah, but Des, we--"
"SHHH!! I'm not gonna listen to yer petty excuses. You three are
in real trouble now. You were messin' with my man, and you know how
I feel about THAT." Desiree crouched over the three skunks and
smiled. It was not a happy smile. The girls could see the fires of
rage burning in her eyes.
"You three are going to get up, walk over to Jim, and apologize,"
she said in a voice generally reserved for speaking to small
children. It was soft and quiet, but with a razor's edge.
"But--"
Des raised her hand up to her mouth, her pointer finger pressed
vertically against her lips.
"Shhh. Don't talk."
The sisters sulked back against the wall.
"As I was saying," continued Des,"you three are gonna apologize to
him. After that, you're going to go back into the house. You're
going to sit in your room and wait for me. You'll probably feel the
urge to run, but that wouldn't be very smart. It would just get you
deeper into trouble. And ladies, you are in SERIOUS trouble." The
chameleon straightened up, the smile never leaving her face. She
glared at the sisters.
"I'll be at your house in a little while. Don't call anyone for
help. Don't leave the room. And by all that's holy, you don't want
to even THINK about bothering Jim."
"But...what are we gonna be doing?" asked Onyx.
Desiree looked up at the sky. She slowly lowered her head, and
steadied her gaze on the skunks.
"You're gonna be waiting for ME."
"W--why?"
The smile returned.
"My dear girl, SOMEONE has to be punished. And I've got just the
right punishment in mind."
She turned away, and began walking towards the sidewalk. Pausing
briefly, she spoke once more, but didn't turn to face the skunks.
"I'll see you three in a while. Don't disappoint me." With that,
she continued walking away.
The girls looked at each other. Their faces were lined with worry.
"Oh fuck. We did it this time. Now we got 'em both mad at us,"
sighed Lori nervously.
"Whaddaya think Des is gonna do?" asked Onyx.
"I dunno. And that's the part that scares me."
