As I've pointed out on other mailing lists, as an American, I do not take
loyalty oaths or forced pledges, nor do I pledge my allegiance to the
flag.

The Pledge of Allegiance is neither traditional or patriotic, nor is it
something the founding fathers would have supported. It was devised as an
exercise to celebrate Columbus Day, and later adopted as a loyalty oath to
be taken by new citizens, the fear being that they would be less likely to
perform treasoous acts if they'd made a pledge. The words 'Under God'
were added fifty
years ago during a time when rampant paranoia was making American citizens
inform on eachother for not being 'American' enough.

And what does 'Under God' mean, in this context? We don't use
biblical law? Are we ruled by God? If so, he's an absentee king. We put
'In God we trust' on our money, but do we? I keep my money in a bank, not
a church.

Say the magical incantation if you like. Patriotism isn't about
ceremonies.
