Mostly, it's simple courtesy. Lola Bunny, Rebecca Cunningham, and
the rest of the corporately owned toons out there have been produced,
had their day, and were shelved by their respective owners. Folks in
our little community are still producing their art, and in many cases
distributing it freely to their fans, mostly because they enjoy doing
so. They don't ask much, but they do ask that people be nice with their
art. Not re-distributing it, or slapping on your own name and taking
credit, etc.

Folks like Eric and Max are pretty cool about people doing fanart
and using their characters, but they do appreciate it when people ask
permission first. More than one artist has had their simple requests
ignored, and have just stopped posting their art, pulled down their
archives, and basically taken their ball and gone home.

If you piss off WB, or Disney, or Fox, they'll send a lawyer to tell
you to cut it out. If you piss off someone just doing art for the fun
of it, they'll stop making new art, because it's not fun anymore. If
someone wants to draw Sabrina the skunk having lots of kinky bondage sex
with ZigZag, something that's definately not in character for her at
all, they'd better be sure to check with eric and max before doing so.
Big companies don't care about much besides their bottom line, and a few
bits of fanart, even very kinky fanart, won't make a difference to them.
in our little community of furries, one thoughtless person can have a
big impact. The important thing is not to be that person.

That's my two cents. I'll also note that we're drifting quite far off
the topic of Skunkworks, so i'll leave it with this thought: Talented,
open minded, and friendly artists are hard to find. Be nice to the ones
you find, support them, and they'll be around for a long time to come.
