I don't think that's fair. Yes, There were sexual
elements to ASB, but the story is also about growth
and change. And I think that a vast majority of the
readership felt some emotional identication for and
with the characters and situation.
The "Problem" as such is this. In many many of the
"Furry comics" out there, the material they seek and
that readers demand (by and large) are what I call
"incident" stories (Where the cast and the action
involve the "incident" of a sexual trist. There is no
more than cursory character development, or dramatic
content as such.)
This is not always the fault of the writers involved.
They supply a type and nature of content to a vehicle
(Magazine) that readers enjoy because of the nature of
"incident" stories.
A little fun, some passing gratification, and on to
the next, like chips and pretzels or "sitcom" TV.
*There is nothing the matter with this, in principal*
(Please take a moment and read the line above again
before I get another boxfull of hate mail.)
But, on the other paw, you can't eat chips all the
time, and stay healthy, or watch sitcoms all day and
not have a brain made out of cottage cheese at
bedtime.
The other side of the problem is that major
publishers (and the distributor) consider anything
different from this to be more of a "risk", and are
therefore less likely to offer multi-book stories or
serious series work.
(That and the fact that there is *ONE* major comic
book distributor in the US makes it harder to gain
distribution.)
But in my mind, these factors do not excuse the lack
of willingness to take these risks, in what is
admitedly an "edgy" fringe field anyhow.

So put all this together with the fact that an entire
generation (almost two now) have problems with
attention spans, and you have *big* problems as a
story teller, trying to hold a flighty audience.
There are lots of good stories out there. ASB is one
example. It's also proof positive that the right sort
of treatment of story matter and ideas from the outset
can bring forth a rare success.
