From my experience, that sounds like it's probably the
cooling fan in the power supply. For a while I was
taking a snipped off q-tip (just clipped the puff at
one end) to poke the fan and that often worked, but I
gave up after a while.
Dunno what your 'puter's configuration is, but so long
as it's not the CPU fan or the chipset fan on an AGP
video card you should be relatively safe. But, yeah,
it's a good idea to get it fixed.

Erf. Sorry your eye's acting up again. I suppose I
should be thankful and not complain when I can't see
through one eye after a while. I sincerely hope you
manage to get things finally patched up there.
Anyway, I won't bore you with potential fan-boy
banter. Be well and keep safe this solstice holiday
and take a little time to relax for yourself if you
can. I'm pretty sure those of us who enjoy your work
will understand.
