They had that joke in a sci-fi novel I read years ago, dealt with a galactic civilization where one world had an odd way of celebrating their millenia of peace (had two worlds set up with genetically engineered beings patterned after the norse pantheon, with some high-technology thrown in, and arranged for them to go to war while they watched, while keeping the beings clueless as to their origins or audience, but they found out and turned the tables).
