Personally, I think most Furs are severely overreacting to stuff like the
article and that MTV special... let's face it, most folks, Furs included, can
barely keep track of what happens on television or in magazine articles for
more than a week... that's why the media keeps bombarding us with the same
stories over and over. A year from now, most folks will have forgotten any
of it ever happened (with the only lasting effects would be the occasional
sitcom rerun featuring a one-shot character with Furry interests). And the
people educated enough to have an opinion that could matter aren't freaking
out or even noticing the articles/specials.
Of course, unfortunately, when an article or a special pops up, the
reasonable furs whose presence would help fight the sensationalism think the
best thing to do is panic and run (no offense intended to anyone, I
personally can't blame you). As a result, when people decide to investigate
the fandom on their own right after learning of it, it looks like it has a
higher concentration of freaks (again, no offense intended to anyone, but
some people just *don't* help the image of furs in general-- it's a fact of
life, and there are people like that in every group). Well, at least until
most of those reasonable furs drift back in.
Myself, I honestly don't care what people think of Furs... anyone who'd judge
me based purely on my involvement with the fandom probably isn't someone
whose opinion I'd respect anyway. Besides, the last thing the fandom needs
is hordes of people who are dim enough to be genuinely inspired to join the
fandom purely by Vanity Fair and MTV.
All of these statements are my own opinions, and I don't expect them to be
liked by anyone else. If anyone has issues with them, I'd recommend taking
it up with me off-list.
