In the spirit of asking first... when you say 'ex-husbend', do you
mean the guy that tried to molest the trio as kids? The guy that, to
my knowledge, Valencia moved to get away from? And Jim is keeping the
Trio's surnames a secret so that same guy doesn't find them?

Actually the one who tried molesting the girls wasn't her ex-husband.
It was a boyfriend, left home alone with the girls.
And the girls clawed him up somehting fierce, even gouging out one of his
eyes.
Val's ex-husband was a boozer. That's the main reason she left him.
