I know what you mean. Even 'small' things requiring people
to put in small amounts of effort don't always appear.
Lack of honour, I call it. If you say you are going to do
something, then BLOODY WELL DO IT! There is only one thing
that pisses me off more than someone talking about what
they are going to do, then doing nothing, is when I say I'm
going to do something, then don't...
With commissions, if an artist is good enough to put the
time in to do your pic, you can at least have the decency
to PAY for it. Why should you wreck it for everyone else
because you're a selfish bastard and don't pay? If you
can't afford to pay, arrange a trade of some kind. Because
of regional differences, this is frequently what I try for.
And being competent in managing one's time is vital. If
you can't do six jobs in one week, don't queue them up to
let the situation occur.
Even with something 'easy' like writing (well, I find it
easier than drawing), I don't take more than one commission
at a time. I will usually have one of my own projects and
one of someone else's going at the same time, but put my
own project on hold till I've finished the commission.
That way in 'quiet' time, or if you get writer's block or
something for that plot, you can go on with the other for a
while. But if you try to write several together, I tend to
find they end up with a few too many similarities, often
influenced by your current 'flavour of the month'...
But in terms of big dollar, one-off items, I'd say drawing
commissions are the way to go. Writing commissions take
about five times longer to do (even at the speed I draw!)
and don't tend to attract as much attention. It all comes
down to furs standing by their word.
Scrapper, Black Dragon, living with honour but thinking
dirty... ;-)
