Easiest way to start out with backgrounds is to take a leaf
from the book of Joseph Ny (a great furry artist who
unfortunately is no longer on line). Use simple geometric
shapes in the background, just to give a bit of depth and
picture completeness. An artist who is currently applying
this style is Martin Gerlach, examples of which are on his
VCL archive.

The other easy technique is having a 'fading foreground'
where you only draw the 'background' details immediately
around the subject and rapidly fade to white. This would
work well for the Natasha pic that Sepp did where she is
supposed to be standing on a bus/train whatever. This
means your proportions and things don't have to be
perfectly accurate, as only a small bit of the surrounds
are included.

Try the geometric shape technique, for a start. It adds a
lot to the picture, making it more complete and giving
better depth.
