Oh, okay. Here's the scoop, then:

About twenty years prior, a government-sponsored agency called
Nomax had designed several genetically-altering formulas. They
ended up recruiting numerous individuals, who unwittingly became the
guinea pigs for the experiments. Now, the formulas worked on
smaller, unevolved animals, but did not appear to work on the
evolved, two-legged versions. The premise behind the experiments
was to design different types of specialized soldiers, who could be
used by the government for whatever sneaky stuff it had in mind.
The main folks who approved the tests were told the formulas would
help to boost different species' specialized traits; they were not
aware that it would eventually alter the subjects' genetic code.
The officials who worked under the main people had a hidden agenda,
however, and since the tests did not show any signs of "improvement"
in the test subjects, the experiment was closed down, Nomax was
officially disbanded, and the sneaky government types were busted.
However...while the initial test subjects didn't exhibit any
unusual abilities, it turned out that their offspring did. There
were nine different lots, I believe. Some resulted in genetic
changes, some did not.
The offspring did not show any signs of their abilities until they
hit puberty, when all the hormones in their bodies went a little
haywire (as they do in _anyone_ who goes through puberty!). In the
end, many of the kids ended up having these freaky "powers" which
would only activate when they were scared or angry (their abilities
are linked to their adrenal gland). Some kids (such as Ricardo,
Jennica, Dean or Cindy) had their powers on all the time, even if
they weren't being used.
Nomax ended up getting back together after some of the members
realized that the test subjects' offspring were manifesting these
unusual talents and abilities. Unofficially regrouped, Nomax
attempted to gather as many of the offspring as they could, in order
to see what they could do, and whether or not they could duplicate
the results. The kids from Lot 6 managed to escape the agency's
compound, however, and ended up uniting with Caterwaul in order to
defeat the agency (or at least get them off their backs!). After
doing lots of research, Caterwaul was able to locate a few of the
other kids (from the other lots) who also had unusual abilities.
The kids, and their families, were essentially "removed" from any
official records (due to some major hacking by Caterwaul), and sort
of placed under Caterwaul's watchful eye.
Some of the kids know how their powers work, and what they can do
with those powers. Others do not. Many of the kids injure
themselves (or others) when learning their abilities.
So no, there is no "Professor X" type, nor is there a manual for
what the kids can do. They, like the readers, will have to learn
about their abilities as time goes on.
