His invulnerability came from a force field that sheathes his body, actually
(in fact, it wouldn't be out of the question to suggest that it's similar to
Scarlet's powers). It also more or less blocked out his sense of touch and
screened harmful gasses from affecting his lungs. However, it did allow him a
sense of taste so he did a lot of eating to make up for it.
