Here's a couple of story-based FPS games with real nice cutscenes written into the maps:
one of these engines would be nice for Caterwaul, you can do other stuff besides fighting and
maiming.
Quake II engine
*Kingpin: Life of Crime [Xatrix, now renamed Gray Matter Studios]
You talk with characters to find out clues about the boss and the hoods. Barter stuff for guns
and
ammo, and extra team members, some gun-hands, others lock-pickers and safe-crackers.
Unreal engine
*Clive Barker's Undying [Electronic Arts]
Talk with members of the mansion grounds as you battle to solve the riddle of the family.
There are cutscenes where you talk with enemy bosses before engaging them in battle.
Unique mode in game: Player fatality shot shows your character being killed by the unusual
monsters
and enemies in different ways when you die.
[If you like this game, you'll also like 'Kiss: Psycho Circus: The Nightmare Child' and its
carnival of
unusual beasts to fight.]
*Star Trek: Deep Space Nine: The Fallen [Simon and Schuster Interactive]
Communicator in HUD has crewmembers giving you info about where you are, and what enemies
there are nearby. [You don't get this help when you play Kira as a Cardassian]
Talk with everyone on DS9 between missions as you play as Sisko, Kira, or Worf- Quark's bar
Nothing from Morn, as usual.] , crewmates on the Bridge, even the tailor shop to talk with Garak.
No
holosuites, sorry.
*Harry Potter series [Electronic Arts]
Talk with fellow classmates, teachers and other denizens in the Hogwarts campus as you go about.
