Turns out it wasn't anything _quite_ so drastic as that. Apparently,
when the power went off (which only lasted maybe 2-3 seconds), the
system was writing something to the registry (this is what was
explained to me while trying to fix the problem). The computer never
knew the power went out, since it was still on when the power
returned. In any case, I had to install another version of XP on the
HD in order to gain access to the drive. I copied/moved whatever files
I _had_ to have onto another drive. I will be reformatting the HD and
installing a fresh copy of XP later today, I hope. Then I will simply
have to reinstall the different programs I used. Shouldn't be too bad.
