Hey Jim, just a lurker with a bit of medical knowledge. I used to
catalog quite a bit of biomedical data from journals and last year
came upon a fascinating study and some followups that have been quite
useful to me. They were about the effects of two antioxidants (alpha-
lipoic acid and acetyl-L-carnitine) on renal function in diabetes
models. Separately, they had very beneficial effects. Together, they
seemed to completely prevent not only diabetic nephropathy, but they
overall improved metabolism, blood glucose control, and may prevent
other complications of diabetes.
Since I have diabetes in my family, I began taking them last year and
found that after about two weeks my energy level increased
dramatically. I was able to work harder, and for longer, than ever
before. Another person already with diabetes to whom I referred the
supplements has also told me of the same effects.
Both can be found at Walmart. I have also found that the effects are
magnified further when both are taken in tandem with vitamins C and E
and also a ginko biloba tablet with a 6-ounce glass of sweet red wine
just before bedtime. The low level of ethanol acts as a vasodilator
and aids in the delivery of the antioxidants to the most minute
capilaries in the kidney and other places of action. It is important
to have one glass of wine only and no other alcohol that day.
Ethanol's vasodilatory effects drop at higher levels and by the third
glass become vasoconstrictive... which is bad in diabetes. It's
called the 'paradoxical dose-response relationship'.
I do hope this will help out!
