From my personal experience:

Dialup pros: Cheap and affordable, modems are cheap, many ISPs give them
out free now.
Dialup Cons: 22.6 kbps average connection speed on most services. 48 kbps
maximum realistic connection. 56 kbps physical limitation. Ties up
phonelines, requires second line to use simultaneously.

Cable pros: Fast, easy to set up and use.
Cable cons: Averages only 620 kbps on most services. Physical maximum
limit of 8 mbps. High latency. Insecure network (LAN-like). Bandwidth
reduced by every cable internet and television user that turns on in
network.

DSL pros: Fast, cheap, secure. 48 mbps maximum physical limit. 920 kbps
average on most services. Some ISPs offer very large packages (BellSouth
had me on a 14 mbps down and 4 mbps up connection for $69.95/mo)
DSL cons: Requires phone filters to use simultaneously. Speed degrades
rapidly if on edges of uplink center coverage. Not supported by all cities'
phone infrastructure. Limited coverage.

Satellite pros: Access anywhere, almost. Up to 480 mbps downstream.
Satellite cons: Uses dialup for upstream. Extremely high latency (1-4
seconds) Speed subject to weather. Will go out during
rain/snow/sleet/ice/hail. Expensive equipment. Expensive service. Needs
frequent maintainence.

Fiber Optic pros: Extremely low latency. Extremely high bandwidth.
Stable, secure.
Fiber Optic cons: Extremely expensive. Extremely limited availability.
