Ahh, but what do all these animated movies have in common? Answer: They're
all old. What about current-produced stuff?

Well, take into account the fact that most of what comes over as
"anime" here are just TV series in Japan. I bet if you took 100 TV
shows that are on US television during any one particular day, 90 of
them would be pretty crappy and boring too.
As for good anime:
Akira
Nausicaa
Laputa
Porco Rosso
Kiki's Delivery Service
My Neighbor Totoro
Pom Poko
Princess Mononoke
Spirited Away
Howl's Moving Castle
Grave of the Fireflies
Reply:
You forgot one, "Project A-Ko."
Brilliantly satirizes the "anime conventions," and having two schoolgirls
get into a catfight that literally tears up the landscape, and wrecks a
starship, how can you go wrong? <G>
