There already was just such a "split," as you say.
The infamous "Burned Furs" movement that fizzled out after too much fighting among the members.
In any fandom, you're going to have the trolls, screwballs, FTB's (Foaming True Believers), etc.
I saw more than my share of the screwballs at Star Trek conventions in the 70's.
(Yes, I went to the 1976 Chicago one.)
In anime there are the "(Fill in the blank)-mon " rabid fans, "Sailor Bubba," (Google that one if you wonder what it is,) and so on.
So in furry, there will be trolls, pedos, "lifestylers," holier-than-thou ultra-conservatives, and such.
Myself, I prefer pin-ups.

I'll pass the compliment on to her! We were talking about the hub-
bub on that chan board while driving to the movie, and she wondered if
the answer to the situation was simply a split? As in, why don't the
old-school fans just break away from all the BS the new ones are
dragging in with them, and sort of have their own sub-group in the
fandom? I figured something like that might already exist, but since
I'm not part of the fandom, I couldn't back that up with proof.
Anyone else know if that's the case?
And just wait until you see some of the others she's got lined up...
