I agree, with a caveat: One must always be aware of what's going into
your system. Since my accident, three of the drugs I've been on have
been pulled from the market for too many fatalities, but I had dropped
them early on when my spouse's research discovered anomalies.

The worst was Vioxx - at the time I was taking it (well before the big
media stink), my blood pressure went from a normal 120/70 to 130/100
or more. I am not used to being red-faced and light-headed, unless my
wife is with me and we're both nekkid. :-)

Doctor: "There is nothing wrong with Vioxx, it's probably something
else."

Spouse: "Uh, then why did his BP shoot through the roof?"

Doctor: "Must be something else."

I went off the damn stuff, and within days I was back to normal (well,
normal for me). I'll live with the arthritis from the broken joints
over that happening again.

So, the moral is: Like any profession, doctors are on a bell-shaped
curve, with most being average, a few who are exceptional, and some
that shouldn't be allowed to cut a steak. Self-education is a good
idea when it's your body (or mind!) at stake.

Oof. Didn't mean to preach, but (as Jim knows) I've been through a
few fun times myself and learned some hard lessons. All that aside,
it's good to have him on the mend - there are damn few good artists
out there with a sense of humor, and we need all we can get.
