Unfortunately, one cannot copyright particular characters. One can
trademark them: for example, Tony the Tiger(TM) is a registered
trademark, that's what the (TM) means.
Copyright means that you cannot copy a particular work unless the
originator tells you that you can. You can create your own work with
the same character, if you wish, because the work is yours - it's your
drawing/interpretation of that character. You cannot create works
with trademarked characters, because they are regarded as the property
of the one owning the trademark. Trademarking is effectively buying a
license from the government to prevent other people from using your
character or logo.
