Unfortunately there's a general bias against being left-handed that's been passed down through the centuries (a former president was born a lefty and his parents tied a string to his left hand and yanked it hard anytime he used it to force him to use the right one instead). Much like a lot of things are built for right-handed people's use (which leads to a variety of accidents and injuries due to people who're left-handed trying to use items built for right-handed people). So not surprised to hear that the teacher tried to discourage it given those biases.

I can write with either hand, but I draw with the right one. Oddly
enough, when learning to write, teachers seemed to discourage writing
with the left hand.
