Here's a snippet ftom the "History" page, which basically covers
their world history as far back as archeological digs can explain:

"Circa 50,000 years ago...

An unknown event occurred which seemed to target the early human
species. Thousands of these creatures were killed and/or used for
food by larger, predatory species. Some scientists speculate the
early human species may have been developing at the same approximate
rate as other species (creating villages and making tools), but may
have tried to claim dominance over other species in their vicinity.
While early humankind had a decent level of intelligence and was able
to wield tools and weapons with deadly intent, they would not have
proven so deadly against larger, more powerful species who not only
had tools, weapons, and the capacity for complex thought, but also
the strength, senses and abilities of whatever feral species they had
evolved from. There are some scientists who disagree with this
speculation, but until further proof is found, evidence seems to
point to this scenario."

So yeah, early mankind pretty much got it's ass kicked. And here's
another interesting little tidbit you might not have considered:
while the various critters on the trio's world speak an assortment of
languages, they are not necessarily our versions of those languages.
For example, Veronika may speak German and Romanian, but there's very
little chance that a human from our world who speaks the same
languages would be able to understand her. Realize, too, that with
different facial structures and mouth shapes, the anthro's versions
of speech would sound different than our own as well.
