I've been following this thread for a while now and noticed that with all the good ideas
here, a very critical thing is missing; something that almost nobody even thinks about
because it's so ubiquitous. While Jim has already mentioned that their monetary system
has been modified slightly, what about their numbering system itself? We think in tens
because we have five digits on each hand, but the furs of Jim's world only have four.
Logically, this means they should think in eights and their easy multiples would be
multiples of four and eight as we think in multiples of five and ten.
This also means that their monetary system would be surprisingly similar to the American
dollar in that a Quarter is 1/4th of a dollar, but the numeric value of the dollar would be 64
cents rather than 100 cents and a Quarter would be 16 cents rather than 25. Of course,
since the word Cent means 100, the name of the penny would have to somehow relate to
64 rather than 100. Talk about creating confusion! Still, as a writer developing my own
world of fur-based characters, this difference is a detail that helps develop the
'suspension of disbelief' needed for a successful story.
A number of people have mentioned the issue that furs are essentially considered 'humans
with tails' as far as artwork is concerned. And the majority of the artwork and writing I see
reinforces this belief. By what I've read here of Jim's world and new art style, he is trying to
break away from that mold, and that means not only learning how to create all-new
bodies that can still be attractive to the human eye, but also make their world as much
their own as he can.
Oh, Jim. I'm going to send a separate email with an inquiry to you. Maybe you can help me
with a problem I have.
