It's mostly a genre issue, I think. More common in furry, star trek, anime
fandom, less common in Sherlock Holmes, steampunk, or Aliens fans.

Subject: Re: [SkunkworksAMA] fan fic question
People tend to exaggerate when depicting themselves, even unconsciously,
which is the problem with writing yourself into a story in general. The
biggest issue with writing yourself into fanfiction is that you don't exist
in the same world as the characters -- putting yourself there immediately
makes the story non-canonical. Furthermore, 90% of fanfic writers add
themselves to a story solely so they can have sex with their favorite
characters. Wild, insane, ego-stroking, plotless sex.
In general fiction, it's a technique that has to be used with great caution.
In fanficiton, it's just a bad idea.

So, as a person who is just delving into his first attempt
at fan fiction, I understand it is NOT ok to write
yourself into the story, even if it isn't by name? What if
it could be done carefully? Or do most of these attempts
end up as bad as the previous posts suggested?
BTW yes, bravo Alex for another great story.
