Starting a new fandom is a great idea; only nobody ‘started’ furry fandom.
You can trace the existence of the word ‘furry’ used by the fandom, and
trace the conventions to the first ‘furry parties’, or ‘zines, or whatever,
but you’ll never find a point when someone said ‘hey, let’s have a fandom!’
It’s not like Star Trek, where we can say with great certainty that there
was no fandom before the series was on TV, since there’s pretty much ALWAYS
been anthropomorphic animals lurking in our brains. Lots of people will
tell you they remember role-playing anthropomorphic animals as a child.
Probably, none of those children role-played herm kitsune with shitting
dicknipples, but I can only really speak for my own childhood.
