The more things change, the more they stay the same. How long has it been
since alt.fan.furry got fed-up with 'lifestylers' and forced them to make
their own club on alt.lifestyle.furry? Five years? Ten? More?
Furry is a microcosm, everything through the lense of anthro animal
characters.. Everything, that's just the way it is and since Furry 'Fandom'
in and of itself is smaller and more compact the fringes are more evident...
if one out of 100 people have mohawk haircuts that's no big deal, if you
grab a con's worth of people and stuff them in a hotel and the people with
mohawks all gather in one corner to talk about their hair then they
stand-out.
I haven't been to a con in a long while, the closest I have to a 'horror
story' is seeing a couple walking the halls wearing thong-style swimsuits
and leopard-print bodypaint, Groat could tell you a few doosies from the old
days. Dude wearing a collar is nothing.
As for the fetish, people are wierd. Some people think furries are
attractive, some think they're attractive in a non purely-aesthetic way.
Some people are dudes who are attracted to other dudes and some are girls
attracted to other girls. Why? Who knows? Who cares? Some people have
wierd kinks that make them happy in the pants reagion and with so many
people with so much free time you're gonna find combinations of people into
spanking who are gay and people who are into watersports who are lesbians
and people who are into auto-erotic asphixiation who think Gadget Hackwrench
has a cute butt.
Is being sexually attracted to a cartoon character pathetic and wrong?
Maybe.... do you seriously think you're the first person to have expressed
that opinion? The more out-there social retards in the fandom generally
come from the legions of geeks and nerds who came out of high school
emotinally damaged to some degree or another and have decided, "Social
skills, yeah, fuck that shit." as a result. The 'Survival of the fittest'
Des rants are entertaining, but functionally they just preach to the choir
without inspiring any self-examination epiphanies in their targets. To
them, it's all just more bullying.
More things change, more they stay the same. A generation of socially
stunted and emotionally crippled young people searches desperatly for a
place to 'belong', find 'Furry' and latch onto it with the vigor of the
neophyte bringing their emotional baggage with them. The 'Old Guard' throws
a fit, declaring the fandom 'ruined' and how these 'Freaks' are destorying
something beautifyl, the new fans counter-attack the 'hatedom' for
'fursecuting' them, the Old Guard make a big show of how they're gonna quit
the fandom and take their toys and go home... some of them actually go
through with it. Eventually the new fans grow up a little, find some
maturity and sense of center long after the Old Guard has abandoned the
fandom to them, becoming the new Old Guard. Then, the next generation of
misfits shambles into the fandom. Lather.. Rinse... Repeat.
But really, if we haven't gone back to the days of condoms floating in the
hot-tub and guys who marry farm-animals showing you their wedding-night
photos whether you wanna see them or not then what does it matter if some
guy somewhere is jerking-off to pictures of Babs Bunny crushing Manhatten
under, "Just the Cutest Tooooooes."? Why so serious?
Rant-Rant-etc...
Sorry to ramble like that Jim, I like your art, and the terrible trio have
inspired as many laughs as they have boners if not more here.. but.. knowing
what I know and seeing what I've seen... you're sounding like a bit of a
whiner.
