You could look at it this way, especially while in the realms of 'new artist' to get your artwork good enough that people actually _want_ to pirate it. No point having something if you are going to use it.
As the discussion has been with JMH previously - he could lock it all away in a cupboard and keep it safe, but what is the point of that? He doesn't get the thrill of sharing his creation and getting the appreciation of fans. Sure, some pirate may rip your work off, but that happens with nearly anything out in public these days in the 'land of internet'. They may not appreciate what you're doing, etceteras, but that seems to be the trade-off, unfortunately.
Even Terri Smith has _some_ artwork on line for people to see. If you don't have something to create demand, then you won't sell anything as most people certainly want to get an idea of what they may be buying.
Tips I was given years ago, that seem to hold true: "Perception is reality" and "people only think you are 1/3 as good as you think you are". "Keep it humble and your less likely to stumble". "The best reason to do something is because you want to".
Scrapper, Black Dragon, because it was given freely does not mean it has no value.

Well when it comes to art, theres a loop hole, a rather big one.... Hypothetical; If I were to take one of Jims characters and make even the smallest change to it, I could claim it as mine...
