You know, I didn't grow up with lots of beatings. I had freedoms I
didn't realize I had. Sure, every now and then some punishment was
warranted; that goes along with the terrain. But not everyone responds
the same way to the same punishments -- past a certain point, physical
discipline simply did not work on me. I am simply not wired to change
certain attitudes or behaviors because there might be pain involved.
Instead, self-awareness and analysis of my own inner motivations has
revealed quite a lot about how and why such things didn't work: I was
acting based on a "hidden" set of motivations, particularly associated
with boredom or lack of interest, among other reasons.

I'm still deciphering a lot of the patters in my head, but I think I
have a pretty good handle on how to influence children with a minimum
of force. "If you beat your child to teach him fear, what happens when
he no longer fears you? But teach him love for others, and his heart
shall know no bounds, even as he respects the boundaries of others."
