And as far as ego goes, if any other species had been given sapience, they would have end up becoming the dominant species.
Ironically, ego isn't a bad thing because studies have shown that without it, depression can set in. I had read in a Discovery magazine that scientists have actually managed to turn off the ego with the use of some sort of magnetic resonation device. The subjects started to undergo the signs of clinical depression until their ego was switched back on.
So ego is really nothing more than a fulfillment of our being (or for any sapient organism for that matter).
