They flap, and she goes up.
Haha! Just messing with you, man. Actually, there are three additional spars on her arms which are connected through various ligament and tendons and such. I drew a few sketches some time ago in order to figure that out.
A bat's wings get in the way all the time, so bats do not generally own vehicles (they usually fly everywhere). The spar near the wrist can move about 45 degrees, from close to the forearm to full lock. The spar at the elbow also has about a 45 degree range of motion, but the rearmost spar has the least amount of motion of them all. When in flight (or preparing to fly), the spars extend outward and essentially lock into place. At this point, the motion and rotation of the arms is used to control the horizontal level of the wings.
The membranes aren't super thick, but they aren't real thin, either. And bats need massive amounts of upper body strength to be able to fly. In one of the future stories, she tears the door off a car when a subject tries to get in it to flee. And I think in the first mission (which was only mentioned on their site, not actually drawn in a comic), a group of felons is fleeing the scene and she ends up yanking the arms off a guy who tries to kill her.
I'll have to see if I can find those sketches...
