Would they often have to worry about something sliding down their backs? It seems like a rather odd natural development.

Imagine trying to slide down something, on your back, with numerous large hooks poking out. The "spikes" are naturally in the extended form, and must be consciously retracted when necessary. It's kinda the opposite of a cat's claws.
