While the absolute number of relative oddballs has gone up, that's only
because the total population has grown by even more. Look at FA, the vast
majority of the content is quite normal and not even mature content. Sure
there's a lot more of the strange stuff than there was back when Avatar and
abp(e)f were the only online sources, there's also more stuff posted in a day
now than there was in a week then.
If your worry is that 'the freaks are taking over the fandom', relax: It
isn't happening and the closest it even did come to happening was well over a
decade ago. If your worry is that 'the freaks aren't hiding themselves in
the closet', get over yourself: The people who rant about the existence of
sub-groups they don't like have done far more damage to the fandom than
the 'freaks' ever could.
