Actually, salmon is a fairly common Native American totem (among those
tribes that fished, mostly the easterly groups since there aren't many
rivers in the midwestern plains), representing abundance among other
qualities.
But yes, people prefer the Big Few, the furry and cuddly types that
everyone has heard of. That's often because they haven't done the
investigation or spirit work that would put these other creatures on
their minds. Lots of people meet Wolf first, then are guided to
others; that's why it is said that Wolf is the teacher.
