Actually, when Asar are babies, they're paired up with a female protector, whose job is to watch over and protect the Asar for the duration of its life. To completely detail the specifics of their relationship would literally take a few pages of text.

They don't really exhibit any emotion, actually. The quills may go up or down if they are alarmed/curious or relaxed (respectively), but that's about it. They communicate with other Khet and Asar via a sort of telepathy, since vocal speech is difficult for them.
