Well, in the story, after some examinations by various doctors/scientists/biologists, the docs realize the equipment does not yet exist to be able to properly study the various kids' abilities (one of the reasons the government agency was so hot to get them). As far as the docs can tell, Jeremy is comprised of an unknown organic metal. All his organs, bones, tissues, and even fluids are a solid metal, which seems to defy the rules of life.
He weighs a little under 500 pounds in this form, gives off no heat signature, shows no brainwave activity, and does not have a pulse or a need to breathe. He also has absolutely no sense of touch, which might come in handy if he has to smash something. But if he has to rescue a person, hold or catch something, he could damage it without knowing.
