If the motherboard's main controller chip is dying, it can cause that exact type of behavior.

If you can, try to boot off of a CD or DVD like your Windows install disk. If it boots and remains stable, that hard drive is probably hosed. Your shop may be able to recover without losing your files, but I won't bet on it.
