In my case, being in another country, the name didn't mean anything to me, though I presumed it was a jab at some political figure.

Shows that humour is very dependent on having a common understanding; like any 'in joke', irrespective of the clique; if you don't understand the details behind the incident, then it loses all impact. Good example being mainstream animated movies these days, where there will be at least two levels of jokes. Slapstick and simple jokes to amuse the kids and more sophisticated situational jokes to amuse the parents who've taken them to the cinema (could be an entire discussion on responsible viewing and parental guidance, but this isn't the right forum). I enjoy going to see animated movies preferably at 'peak' times in the cinema to get the bigger mix of audience - can be quite interesting to listen to who reacts to what. Then on other days I like to go when it is quite and just follow the story (or lack of)...
