Australians find it funny Americans refer to the footwear we all call thongs as "flip-flops", which is a colloquialism for the same thing.  To extract from dictionary.com - a thong is a narrow strip of leather or other material, used especially as a fastening...  So they are little straps that hold something on - makes perfect sense to describe the footwear that way -strapped to your feet.  We tend to call 'thong' underwear G-strings; I'm not sure of the name origin - Wikipedia has various speculations, and mentions: In Australia the term G-string is usually used to refer to any garments in this style, while the term thong usually refers to a kind of rubber sandal.

Though taking JMH's joke into an 'Aussie context'; yes, we have thongs for 6 year olds, in lots of bright colours, that they wear at the beach and can slip off when they arrive.  Unless the sand is hot, 'cos otherwise you may burn your feet!

Recycling Paul Kidd's joke from Tank Vixens: an A-string is like a G-string, only a little higher...  :-P

Scrapper, Black Dragon, what you said may not be what you meant, let alone what they interpreted...
