I don't think it would have made a difference whether Penance was a bear, skunk, mouse, cat or any other critter. She is a demon no matter what she looks like on the outside and would still do what she does.

Hello this is DVD Skunk here I have a question if Jim Hardiman had made Penance a skunk instead of a grizzly bear would that really changed any of the comics with her interacting with the other characters or the DBM story would have made more sense according to the caterwaul species population sheet would she have been able to gain her victims trust more as a species which has a higher percentage of the population like Skunk or mustelid then ursine?
