Yeah, those things are kind of creepy. I don't know whether, in this instance, the two guys freaked out because she began to move, or because, being animals and possessing animal senses, they suddenly realized there was something very BAD in front of them.

Early in the story, Penance soon realizes that others fear and retreat from her when she approaches, and then begins to understand it's because of the people's heightened senses (kind of like what you might see in a regular animal when some bad paranormal shit starts to go down). Eventually, she learns to constrict that field close to her, which also results in either distorting or completely removing her image from electronic media.

The battery drain trick was sort of a nod to the phenomena of areas reputed to have paranormal activity, and their draining of batteries from vehicles and miscellaneous recording devices used by paranormal investigators.
