That depends on which definition of democracy you use. While there are very
few 'pure' democracies, (and none of any real size), common usage of the word
includes things like parliamentary democracies, (e.g. Canada), and democratic
republics, (e.g. the US).
(To forestall the usual quibbling: Constitutional republic and democratic
republic are not mutually exclusive, the US is both.)
